Mackay

Mackay is the largest city in the Whitsundays region. This is one of the fastest growing population centers in Queensland and the economic powerhouse of central Queensland. Just to the west are massive mining ventures that export minerals world wide through the Hay Point bulk loading terminal and there are also huge agricultural industries in the region where sugar, beef and many other products are grown. Mackay has grown dramatically over the past twenty years with a building boom that has seen many new suburbs, industrial estates and tourist ventures come to fruition. The new boat harbour and marina complex has completely revolutionized boating in the region and the marina is now chock a block with fishing charter operators, tourist cruise boats and private yachts and cruisers. The waterfront along the marina is now covered with service industries, hotels and apartment developments.

Mackay has its own airport and you can fly in direct from all southern destinations like Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. There is a lot of accommodation available in Mackay with lots of hotels and motel complexes. There are also several beach front resorts. Be warned though, that due to the mining boom it can be almost impossible to find availability. Do not go to Mackay thinking that you will get something when you get there!
